If you are not a vim-man....there has to be a double entendre in there
somewhere waiting to come out.....gedit is also a good alternative for
simple python programming. You can also add some extra plugins and have a
pretty good Python IDE -

comes with gnome, so you may already have it installed.

A word of caution. If a book uses a particular IDE, then I would stick with
that. It can be confusing trying to understand what the book is saying
while translating into a different IDE than what is shown in the page. Just
my 2 cents.
