You can see the value of any variable just by typing: echo $STEAMROOT It'll probably be something like /home/user/.steam But, if you've installed your games in multiple locations, then it would come back empty (because it would be an array or a list of directories), and thus expand to nothing leaving: rm -rf /* Which means wipe your whole OS.
