I agree with Brian....I would not put any money into a 3 year old laptop when $100 is the incremental cost of a new laptop. Three years is a really long time in the laptop world. It is easy to find the issues with installing Linux on a laptop - just google the model number and Linux. I have found that many others have blazed the trail before and know where there are issues.
