delboy@ladmo:~/.local/share/applications$ ls -l mimeapps.list -rw-rw-r-- 1 delboy delboy 15740 Jan 15 02:06 mimeapps.list I went into system settings - file associations and added amarok to the list of files to play mp3 files and moved it to the bottom of the list. Next I checked mimeapps.list and found the following two lines. From mimeapps.list audio/x-mp3=kde4-amarok.desktop audio/x-mpeg=kde4-amarok.desktop Then I went back to file associations and removed amarok from the list of files to play mp3 files. I clicked on an mp3 file and vlc played it. I went back to look at mimeapps.list and these two lines were still there.
