If yoou are sure it is a backup program doing it but do not know what it is, here is a suggestion that might help you find it. Open Synaptic and use the search icon (not the quick search box) to search for the word backup. Look at the results for a green box indicating a backup app that is installed. Another thought is to look to see if a backup of some kind might be scheduled as a cron, anacron, or at job causing it to run regularly.
