I am familiar with ImageMagick and believe it is not under active development anymore. Graphicsmagick has replaced it and/or definitely forked Image. As far as feh it is a image viewer. It pretends to do nothing but show pictures and I have found it more reliable than full blown gui apps. I know it runs ontop of X but I'm not sure if it runs in FrameBuffer. But then you can use fbida and zv out of X. Feh also integrates well with Mutt and viewing images in emails.s far as newness a "quick glance shows at a min. 4 yr history. :) I'm assuming, but not confirmed on this it came over from the BSD's. Then the climate in the early 90's was mostly cli so it could have started there. In addition feh is used all across the "oodles" de's/wm's as screensavers and background setters for the desktop. I have used feh to make conky transparent. I was more like a glue because conky couldn't do it by itself and the layers for the background of KDE 3.5.x have an invisible layer that feh manipulates to make conky "disappear".
