What are the errors? Where are you hanging? When you boot into any Linux - you can start with nofb (no framebuffer) or nopcmcia or noacpi. Did you try booting into safe mode? Take your machine name and go to Ubuntu forums - search for others who had your issues. Once you complete the installation, you can formalize your startup options as default passed to grub (or lilo). If this is just a VESA Video card X11 issue, that's going to be solved in a similar manner. Linux is like a good partner - it WILL tell you very clearly what it's problem is.
