Actually, ubuntu 6.06 is far from the latest. ubuntu 6.10 came out last October and one of the improvements was to the wireless handling. 6.10apparently works out of the box for significantly more wireless hardware sets. In addition ubuntu 7.04 is due in April although I do not know if it does anything more for wireless.
