Maybe I did not need to but I have given root a password so doing that part is trivial. Perhaps I could get rid of that but the other part below may be more to my question. > 2) Can I set up ubuntu like that and so root could startx and run GUI > > apps if I wanted instead of having to sudo them from my user? > you can run apps as root as long as root has permissions to display on > your x windows session. It still begs the issue of how to actually run some of the gui apps but that is another subject entirely. However, xhost +root responds with xhost: bad hostname "root" The man page clearly shows the argument can be a host or a user name so either it is rejecting root or there is additional syntax. E.G. I tried xhost +root@ldesk which also fails with: > root@ldesk being added to access control list > X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for > operation) > Major opcode of failed request: 109 (X_ChangeHosts) > Value in failed request: 0xfe > Serial number of failed request: 7 > Current serial number in output stream: 9 > l > in the terminal type > whoami > > - -- > JT Morée > PC Xperience, Inc. > -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- > Version: GnuPG v1.4.2.2 (GNU/Linux) > Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org > > iD8DBQFFa8SP1JwGi/ukQqERAiCbAKCSzdHDtzwQOpiap/zht1s1XZ05FwCfa+Cb > 31CDrPo5fh8DvpTQBcRL44Y= > =LHvq > -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- > > -- > This message has been scanned for viruses and > dangerous content by MailScanner, and is > believed to be clean. > MailScanner thanks transtec Computers for their support. > > --------------------------------------------------- > PLUG-discuss mailing list - PLUG-discuss@lists.plug.phoenix.az.us > To subscribe, unsubscribe, or to change you mail settings: > http://lists.PLUG.phoenix.az.us/mailman/listinfo/plug-discuss > -- Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind. - Dr. Seuss
