I THINK this model Thinkpad (R51), among others has some sort of wonky
PATA-SATA bridge, where the disk controller is a SATA controller with a
built in adapter to accept PATA drives (but without any way of removing said
adapter to install a SATA drive).  Perhaps that's what the hde is
referencing?

Either way, I was able to edit the /etc/fstab and changed the /dev/hde1 and
/dev/hde5 entries for the boot and swap to /dev/hda1 and /dev/hda5.  After a
reboot, everything appears to be working correctly.
