How very strange. I remember now in all the reading I did someone else reporting an alternating condition (though I forget what it was). I can tell you for sure that I did total shutdown a number of times, but I cannot be certain that any of those times was from windows which is the only time that machine ever made a sound of any kind. I don't think I reported it, but about 40% of the time, SUSE would go to a black screen after I saw the console line for login rather than getting to the graphic login. Just on a hunch I did a Ctl-Alt-F1 and got the console followed by a Ctl-Alt-F7 which displayed thr graphic login. This was repeatable every time the system seemed to hang on a black screen at startup. Definitely some hinky stuff there somewhere.
