Mandriva 2007 is very solid I am running it right now. I haven't used VMWare but it is said to work very well. For dual boot, just install XP first and leave some free, unformatted disk space (or shrink your existing partitions), then run the Mandriva installer. When prompted, install the bootloader into the MBR. Works very well.
