I'm somewhat surprised that someone using Linux is even asking such a
question.

Answer - try them and see what works for you.  As far as running MP3's "out
of the box" so to speak, both my recent installs of Debian and Kanotix (my
favorite distro so far) played MP3s thru XMMS with no modifying/tweaking.
