I have to agree with Xandros for a laptop.... I personally used it with my Toshiba. :) It is Debian based and very user friendly. I am currently though running Fedora Core 3 on my laptop and Core 2 on my servers, having become a big fan of Fedora and the great resources available to it via apt4rpm. (The debian package manager ported to RPM distros.)

I have used a lot of different distros over the last several years. Suse,
Mandrake, Red Hat, and Fedora 1,2 & 3. But the one I'm using right now,
Xandros, is about the best one I have tried.

The free version of Xandros 3 can be downloaded by BitTorrent or you can go to
Fry's and spend about $60 to get the version that will run Windows Office
products. It has very smooth hardware detection, and a very solid file
manager/GUI. It comes out of the box with the java and media plug-ins
installed in Mozilla.

It does come with an older Evolution mail client. But I was able to install
the KDE outlook clone and I have been happier with it than I was with
Eviolution 2 anyway.

Hi!

I'm about to come into possession of a decent notebook that I would like
to turn into a linux box for use as a portable web development machine.

I'd like to get the LAMP stuff on there, as well as Ruby on Rails, along
with some other nice tools.

But that isn't the problem. The problem is that while I have used
Solaris and Unix back in the day, I have never used Linux and have no
idea what would be a good distribution to get to put on this machine.

I would love to hear some recommendations and ideas. Thanks for all your
help.
