Novell, more specifically, Netware is a great product. It is a rock. With Novell moving the Netware services to the Linux world in the form of Open Enterprise Server, I am even more excited. Any Linux distribution should be able to fulfil all of the same functions for a small network with a low number of users. Samaba for file/print, LDAP for directory access, etc. I think choosing the right distribution really comes down to a couple of administrator questions. Do you like the software packaging system? Are updates provided in a timeframe that is acceptiable? Is the distribution geared for your hardware platform? I'm sure there are more. As far as CentOS. From what I have gathered, it is really similar to RHEL. I have no problem with RPM's and it seems that the security updates do come out in a reasonale timeframe. I lean more toward SuSE myself. Even any of the BSD's might be a viable option. -----Original Message----- From: plug-discuss-admin@lists.plug.phoenix.az.us on behalf of George Sent: Fri 5/6/2005 8:13 AM To: PLUG Subject: CentOS to Replace Novell ... maybe ... ??? A friend has a small company with Novell network. It has served very well for many years. He is having troubles finding someone to support Novell and wants to move to something else. His work stations are basically MS (98, 2K, XP). MS people are telling him to go MS. I am telling him to go Linux and am leaning to CentOS. He is willing. I want to be absolutely certain (if there is such a thing) that CentOS Linux will not be a mistake. Any negative war stories about CentOS serving an MS workstation world? What about Raid? We are probably going to build the box and want quality components. Any recommendations on the best (if there is such a thing) Mobo? I feel comfortable with power supplies and memory. Any other components of a critical (quality wise) nature? It's a small co, less than 10 workstations in the foreseeable future. Therefore what would be a good minimum for: CPU speed? Memory size and speed? Other?
