I think that procmail, as an MDA, should handle the delivery just fine, but it would definitely cause problems with programs that attempt to connect to port 25, like mailx apparently does. I guess it should be theoretically possible but it causes problems in practice. Although, if a program called /usr/sbin/sendmail directly, it still ought to work.
