Ok, flame me if you will, but what I call 'the kitchen sink editor' (emacs) has a hex edit mode that works pretty well also. I've used it and it worked great, and I've used emacs on some pretty huge files (over 1G, as I recall - you just need enough ram ;-) Its been a while, so I don't remember details, other than you have to get in  to and  out of hex edit mode.
