Thanks Aaron for your  suggestion.  I followed your instructions.  Now Discover recognizes that it's online.   The network manager gui still isn't there.  I tried nmcli. $ nmcli -a enp5s0: unmanaged         "Realtek RTL8111/8168/8411"         ethernet (r8169), 00:1A:4D:93:EF:2F, hw, mtu 1500 lo: unmanaged         "lo"         loopback (unknown), 00:00:00:00:00:00, sw, mtu 65536 How do I tell network manager to manage the connection?  I checked /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf.  I changed false to true, rebooted but no effect.
