Not exactly a linux topic, but since most modern home (or industrial) 
automation/security solutions tend to be linux-based, thought I would 
ask here.

I've been playing around with home automation for years, just wondering 
if anyone else does so as well.  Often feels I'm going this stuff alone, 
and would love to collaborate with other local geeks for ideas and just 
seeing what others are doing.

I've run everything from Homeseer on embedded-ish XP builds (yes, ick) 
interacting with various Insteon PLM's back in 2006 to 2010 or so as the 
only decent solution out there, even as a windoze app, to control my 
various insteon devices with varying successes.  Since then, I've used a 
hybrid of things like proprietary gateway controllers from various 
places for Insteon, ZWave, older 319.5mhz wireless security gadgets, 
one-wire busses, rs232 to network tricks to all sorts of things, elk 
security, network cameras, lights, and more lately hacking against a 
Vera as a controller for it all.  Most of the main outlets in my house 
are insteon-controllable today, most room sensors all zwave, and 
possibly will be migrating to zwave or zigbee eventually to phase out 
insteon (not always the best solution, but pretty switches!).

I'm looking at moving to OpenHAB on a vm to rf gateways (like insteon, 
zwave, zigbee), which seems more of a versatile and finally well 
supported OSS solution, so wondering if anyone else is doing like out 
here.  Looking at Samsung Smartthings hub or like too that actually have 
hacker/developer community support and open enough. Experiences here are 
welcomes and desired!

If enough interest, maybe a separate list or various web group can 
ensue.  Likewise if curious, happy always to answer questions on or off 
list.
