Linux Mint 17 is excellent in most ways, but the sound volume on my new
Dell Inspiron laptop model 3542 is terrible - barely audible.  Even with
headphones plugged in and all volume settings as maximum, the sound
volume is extremely poor.

What can I do to improve the sound volume?
