We don't get it back. The two party political powers will never give up that grasp, and neither will the corporate entities that pocket them. I won't even pretend to believe things will be made right until something other than a republican or democrat come to power. Until then, it's right pocket or left of some upstream power that has vested interest in keeping people deaf, dumb, and blind, letting government workers dictate and derive in the name of "national security", with obvious loose interpretation with a blatant lack of oversight. Like you, I've said these things for years, rather unpopular, but truth tend to hurt a misguided sense of national pride. I hate politics, as it's a quagmire like religion I just tend to avoid, but having worked for service providers, corporations, just about any slightly advanced organization, I've seen how due process gets abused first hand pertaining to tech. When guys in black suits show up with a fisa warrant and ask for an optical tap and collector system silently to be inserted into a given path of a host to sniff them, or take a hard disk (or all) from a raid system, it's never to be talked about again. It's something at times even IT management isn't told what's going on, and comes straight from legal, bypassing all change control to stay off the books. Your *rights* at work... Look at my linkedin and see which of my prior employers might have affected you. ;) Now I'm on the terrorist watch list, but I suspect I have been anyways...
