I know you hate upgrades, but it sounds like you need to get to the latest version of KDE. They killed off nepomuk in the latest version. They still have the semantik desktop stuff, but they replaced nepomuk with baloo, and it's much much much nicer on the system. That being said, when you first install the latest version on your system, baloo will index you drive rather aggressively and cause some slowness while it is doing it. Just leave your machine on overnight and allow it to finish. Once it's done you won't notice it at all.. not even a little bit. It's a really nice new system that does away with the database that was really slowing things down with nepomuk as well as using a completely different method to index files. Once it's done indexing you can do some really cook file searches as well as creating virtual folders that thanks to the new system pop up almost instantly.
