I recommend doing a DD of each partition to its own file, then a 'dd if=/dev/sd count=1' to a file to get the partition table. For one thing, it means you can try mounting each file readonly ('mount -o ro,loop file.for.partition.1 /mnt/looking'). For another, if you had multiple partitions, each of which would fit on drives you have 'laying around', but all of which wouldn't fit on a single drive - you can restore the partitions to different drives and possibly be up and running without having to buy a new drive immediately....
