I have an Ubuntu Machine sharing out an ext4 share and it runs like a champ. However it is a completely unrestricted share and i cheat and use webmin to manage it. I like webmin because it doesn't do everything for you. it just breaks down config files in a nice way. but it was pretty handy. In my shares case i set the share to use a specific user for local file permissions then allowed guest access and it was a go. was very simple.
