Thanks JD. The "<E>" just signified <ENTER>

I tried this (which didn't work):
feh -x -g 400x400 image.jpg; kwrite textfile.txt &

But then tried this (which did work):
feh -x -g 400x400 image.jpg & kwrite textfile.txt

Perfect.  Just what I needed.
