How are you trying to copy files and what are you authenticating against? I'm guessing from what you wrote you have 4 computers on the network: Mint, Ubuntu, XP, and IBM (UNIX or something?), and your trying to share resources using SMB. I would also probably assume XP is appending something else to your username, as in you type 'user' it sends 'MYCOMP\user'. If this is for some quick and dirty file transfer I would use smbclient and forget nautilius, if it's an ongoing issue you could think about using samba for centralized authentication.
