Every time i put Linux on a Laptop/netbook i have taken to using this tool http://sourceforge.net/projects/jupiter/ took a default Ubuntu 10.10 on my e6510 (i7 with a quatro 3100) from 2.5 hours to 4-5 hours use time. and kept it rather useable and peppy. Jupiter is a rather nice set of power management settings and management interface.
