badblocks in linux is an excellent stress test code: badblocks -f -t random -w -p 10 -s -v /dev/ this will do 10 passes of a random pattern in destructive read/write mode, indicate which blocks its writing and print any addition debug info. I have used this on all new drives to force the drive to map bad clusters into its on-board firmware.
