I like WD as well. Their warranty exchange process is a breeze, and they also have a nice customer loyalty program that saves some $$ when replacing a drive that is out of warranty. AFA testing goes, I simply use mkfs.ext3 and use 2 -c flags. This does 4 complete cycles (1010, 0101, 1111, 0000) of writes and reads to the partition. I do this especially on used drives, but have begun doing it on new ones as well.
