0) Use nano's ESC ESC o function:

1) Alternate editor:

# sudo apt-get install pico

Use pico and Control X (save and exit).
Use pico and ESC ESC o

2) Set up a serial console:

3) Change your telnet terminal emulation from xterm or set a display variable.
