This probably isn't your problem, but the flash issues I had (in Ubuntu 8.10) were all related to me running the x86_64 version of Ubuntu (and consequently Firefox) and the 32-bit version of flash. Once Adobe released the 64-bit flash (in beta), it's been running like a dream. The symptoms I had were different though. Basically, I would get an inactive gray box instead of the flash content. I would usually have to restart Firefox for flash to come back to life.
