Personally, I'd shy away from Abit because they recently left the motherboard business. Long-term support may be an issue. You should think about memory a bit more-- if you want ECC memory, you really have to pick a suitable board -- there are, for example, dozens of LGA775 boards, but only a handful which support ECC memory. Also, in many of the categories, if you're going single-socket, the Xeon and the corresponding Core CPU are virtually identical (some claim the former gets more aggressive testing and binning), so you might want to see how it impacts your budget. You might also consider a Phenom II setup- I think they support ECC on the built-in memory controller. -----Original Message----- From: Jeff@WealthXtreme.com To: plug-discuss@lists.plug.phoenix.az.us Sent: Fri, Jun 19, 2009 5:18 pm Subject: Motherboard question. Greetings, I have two ATX boxes I wish to rebuild with all new internals.  I am looking for motherboards for both.  I wish to run some flavor of Linux server on them and would like your opinions.   So far, the devices I will need at least one of these boards to support, if not both are : Adaptec 29160 Ultra160 SCSI Card Seagate Model STD68000N DDS3 Tape Backup One Seagate Cheetah ST336752LW  HDD Each unit also already has a Seagate "Hornet" SCSI Tape backup mounted in it.   I think these are 5.25 " Tapes ?  They are larger than the smaller DDS3 tapes.  One of the Model numbers on one of the units is "STT38000N". These devices may be too old for the new technologies, but I was hoping to possibly find boards with maybe 64-bit, 133 MHz FSB or better, Quad Core Xeon, and at least 8GB of RAM.   I'm really interested in the ABIT boards.  I know I may be reaching here, but any help would be greatly appreciated.   I would like to purchase the boards and start putting it all together, then I would also like your opinions on the best Linux Server Distr and would like to bring it all down to an install fest sometime to get it all configured correctly. Thanks Again, Jeff --------------------------------------------------- PLUG-discuss mailing list - PLUG-discuss@lists.plug.phoenix.az.us To subscribe, unsubscribe, or to change your mail settings: http://lists.PLUG.phoenix.az.us/mailman/listinfo/plug-discuss --------------------------------------------------- PLUG-discuss mailing list - PLUG-discuss@lists.plug.phoenix.az.us To subscribe, unsubscribe, or to change your mail settings: http://lists.PLUG.phoenix.az.us/mailman/listinfo/plug-discuss
