I would reduce the system to minimum complexity until we know that the pieces work. If you don't have a link (in this case association) you can't grab an IP address. If you don't grab an IP address (or assign one on the appropriate subnet after a "link" is detected), you won't talk to anyone. DHCP will provide you with an IP that "works". After you have a link... Once you get there, move some packets, verify that the hardware/software/drivers enchilada is operational, and then fire up the WPA. So far, you have one equation and 2 variables.
