Well if you say it's about $80 a month, WITHOUT the data transfer costs, that $960 a year. For $960, I could build a sweet little Quad core system, and run VmWare or Virtual Box Maybe a 64bit version of linux, with 8 or 16 GB of memory. The high price is only one drawback of using EC2 as a "leased" host. It makes a huge amount of sense if you use the API to launch instances and do work for you. That is assuming you don't have a lot of data to transfer because that become time and money consuming.
