FWIW, I just built an XP Pro VM, and noted a few disk usage levels:
.) base install (SP1) - 1.6G
.) SP2 upgrade (incl IE7) - 4.0G
.) SP3 upgrade (incl .net 1.1) - 6.3G
.) restore points deleted - 4.8G
That's with no applications to speak of.
