I have gotten doom running sometime in the last 2-3 years and it was on Gentoo. It did take a bit of work to get things in that were needed, but it was worth it. The problem with the things from idsoftware currently is that the binary is from 1994, with a file type of " Linux/i386 demand-paged executable (ZMAGIC)". Not terribly good on the usual ELF binary system.
