Guys I have taken the plunge after reading Alan Daley's interview and
I have a notebook with the following hardware but no sound.

Dell Inspiron 1420
320GB HDD
  / = 40GB
  /usr = 10 GB
  /var = 10 GB
  /home = 257GB
  Swap = 962MB
4GB of RAM
1.83 Core 2 Duo Processor

I made sure to download any updates with the adept package manager and
get the source for alsa.  Not sure what to do now.
