From what I can remember, there is a "stub" that uncompress the kernel, setups the environment and jumps to main.c in the kernel. Look in the boot.s or .c in the arch directory of the kernel source if you want to know the guts of it. I have once traced the whole process of loading and starting the kernel by reading the source. Fascinating in what one can learn to see what it takes to load and boot the kernel.
