Further down that page, I happened on this link : 
http://www.howtoadvice.com/Ext3Max/

This explained how to use the 'dumpe2fs' command to get the block size 
for the device.

Something like this :
'sudo /sbin/dumpe2fs -h /dev/sdb1 | grep "Block size"'
did the trick.
