ID3 tags do have a specific naming convention. While id3v2 is more free form, the names are supposed to be a specific list of names. Check out: http://www.id3.org/ for more info. I have a huge array of MP3's, which I store on my linux home fileserver, and when I retag something i use mp3info. Specifically, I use the updated mp3info2 which comes with mp3info. mp3info will retrieve, store & write id3v1 tags, and mp3info2 will retrieve, store & write id3v2 tags. While you can write your own tags w/ id3v2, be aware that when someone else plays that MP3, they most likely will not see the genre you wrote in, but rather something else, as they still refer to the #'s of the overall id3 tag. I don't think I can explain well enough to clarify, but it's all on the website mentioned above.
