- From your description it sounds like the filesystem (NTFS?) was resized
down to 35G but the partition did not get resized because you had to
quit.  ( how long did you wait?  sometimes it takes hours to get done.)

anyway.  try the ubuntu install again.  if you tell it to resize the
ntfs space it might fix the partition and the fs too.  If not, you will
probably have to do it with parted, qtparted, gparted, or some
equivalent tool.  You can probably use fdisk too.  but it wont' report
the fs size so you'd have to be careful that you dont make the partition
too small.
