How big of a file? Was it preloaded into memory? What is the speed of your hard drive, your processor, your memory buss, etc.? Try something in the 1MB range and then in the 4MB range and then in the 256MB, 512MB, and 2GB range and see how your numbers change. Try having something in a ram disk and see how much faster it goes. Try manually dropping your connection speeds to 10mb/s and seeing how fast it goes. Then you have overhead. But in truth, most of it is just the computer's ability to feed and receive information from the network. I would look at it and say if you are able to download a DVD in 2 Minuets then you are getting perfect Gigabit Speed, which I have never seen. And yes the cable makes a huge difference. -----Original Message----- From: plug-discuss-bounces@lists.plug.phoenix.az.us [mailto:plug-discuss-bounces@lists.plug.phoenix.az.us] On Behalf Of David Sent: Thursday, May 17, 2007 8:03 AM To: plug-discuss@lists.plug.phoenix.az.us Subject: gig network again I recently bought my gig network hardware: netgear GS605 switch 2 Tredware PICTX nics The only thing I didnt replace are the calbes. ethtool shows both new nics at 1000/full duplex. Here's the problem. time dd if=/dev/zero of=/home/daz/udaz/testfile bs=32k count=32768 32768+0 records in 32768+0 records out 1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 371.025 seconds, 2.9 MB/s real 6m11.180s user 0m0.020s sys 0m5.820s When I switch back to my 100M switch: time dd if=/dev/zero of=/home/daz/udaz/testfile bs=32k count=32768 32768+0 records in 32768+0 records out 1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 437.263 seconds, 2.5 MB/s real 7m17.364s user 0m0.028s sys 0m10.113s So, the question: Will my kernels negaotiate a 1G connection if the cables are not gig qualified? If not, then I need to look at something other than the network hardware (unless I just got really crappy equipment).
