Ben, Assuming that the "individual hired" had experience as well as the education to back it up, I would say it was fair to offer around $18-$22/hr which breaks down to $37.5k-$45k/yr. This is a small price to pay for a newbie with education. I would then suggest that the individual receive an increase following completion of the degree as well as being offered Full Time status. Again this is taking into account the individual has real world experience. If they have nothing but book knowledge, they get less pay for the training they receive. I did not mean to sound blunt earlier, I just answered the email quickly. As far as "any" job posting goes, I agree, they should be posted and they are appreciated, however, when the salary does not fit the position it should be noted. They should not be insulted, just open to suggestions. The posting states you are looking for an all around IT person. This would mean proficient in Database, Network and System Administration. This requires an individual who not only knows how to do Admin tasks, but a tech who can also make up cables and troubleshoot/install hardware. Also you mention Netware, not every schlep in the Network world can do this or deal with Cisco routers and such.. Backups are another deal as well, are you going to trust the average Joe with the data, my bet is no. Just a thought.. I understand that contract work pays much more per hour ($75-$135) as stated by Michael. Maybe I can change this into a thread of what current rates are for salariedtech employees in this field.
