I have a similar situation, using the generic `nv' driver rather than the blob. I am able to do presentations at limited resolutions. I think the best I've got on a projector was 1024x768. Anything higher results in the bars & boxes as you describe. You might also see if limiting your color depth makes a difference (just guessing on that).
