There's more to it than this, but basically, Novell did a deal that many feel violates the spirit of the GPL if not the letter of it by "paying" Microsoft a fee for the use of their software patents in exchange for MS agreeing not to go after Novell or their customers for using any software in "violation" of their patents. It basically lays the groundwork for MS to try to enforce their software patents against those who might be using them without paying a license fee.
