I know that for CIV IV there is a specific patch to the program itself
that should allow you to run it without having the CD in the drive.
I don't believe it actually needs the CD for the game content once
installed.

I don't have the patch (I don't play CIV) but I don't believe it's
hard to come by in fact a quick google for CIV IV cd patch came up
with some interesting results.
