Yes.  It's possible to attach to a usenet post data other than text.  If 
a file is too large for one post, it's broken up into as many posts as 
are needed.  The attached file can be a photo of a few KB or the latest 
Doctor Who episode a couple of hours after it's broadcast.  The last 
time I looked, Google groups does not handle the alt.binaries groups.
