Have you installed libjpeg in /usr/local/lib? That's fine, but you need
to install it as a shared object. Quick 'n dirty, as root:

cd /usr/local/lib
ld --whole-archive --shared -o libjpeg.so libjpeg.a
/sbin/ldconfig

And then try again with gd.

You may want to look into compiling libjpeg properly, or use your
distribution's package.
