I have had OpenWRT on my WRT54GL for some months now. I haven't done much with it beyond the base install, mostly for lack of time. It just works and I am quite happy with it. I have not tried the other firmware out there, though I'd probably try DD-WRT just because it seems more popular than then others, besides OpenWRT.
