You may be correct. I like the idea of creating a program and selling the service to go with it, but I want to sell the program as well. I don't like re-creating the wheel, so if I can use software from something else, I'll do it. It's difficult with GPL software if you don't want to GPL your software, but many BSD licenses allow that. I'm not against the GPL, I just think people go over board with the ideology. When I have the opportunity, I GPL anything so others might benefit, or so I can re-use something later on. But many times, I want to use something and I cannot incorporate it because my final code will not be GPL'd. I just prefer the BSD style that we can do whatever we want with it. That to me is open source. I guess I'm just an open source kind of guy, not a free software kind of guy. I'm not going to apologize for my comments, because I still believe that the GPL is just anti-business. Partly why the LGPL was made, so we could use libraries in non-free software. But I don't hate it where I would try to make people not use it! I always suggest it first, then if they are afriad I move on to something else. I don't want to keep fighting on this thread because we are talking about opinions and personal viewpoints here, and unless something profound is said, I'm afraid this thread is only going to continue in a downward spiral doing more damage to this list and our want to help eachother out than it is worth. For that I am sorry. I should have kept my mouth shut, but I appreciate the ability to rant here at times, as many others do as well. Just in my particular case, the GPL irks me at times. nathan On Wednesday 18 October 2006 08:31, you wrote: > GPL is very business friendly - you have a particular angle on it that > you aren't articulating but rather painting it with a broad and > misleading brush. > > Craig > > On Wed, 2006-10-18 at 08:20 -0700, Nathan England wrote: > > Honestly, I don't own an iPod.
